Stoneware, underglaze, white slip, fired to 1225 Celsius, 2023 Size: L-R 7x7x6, 10.5x7x6.75 inches How does one visually portray ‘volume’ was the line of enquiry and the answer that emerged is - in the ‘fullness’ of a form. In contrast, the more convex a form, the visual triggers are that of a container – one that is looking for something to contain. I was also interested in exploring how the foreground contrasts against the background in the same form, thereby creating shadows and a sense of solemnness. The texture is purposefully bristling and is an invitation to touch. Colour is pale gray with splashes of white. Individually, the stark severity of the forms led me to imagine that while there is a fullness to the form, these represent a certain sense of solitude. Bringing them together, there is a sense of abundance and hence, ‘Abundance is spun out of solitude’.
